Control of Pesticide and Insecticide in Raw Materials

Use of chemicals to produce food started in the last century due to the development in petrochemical refining technologies. But along with increased production of food it resulted in various side effects including cancer diseases. To avoid the health related dangers because of the usage of certain chemicals in food FSSAI Rules-Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1955 amended in 2004 finally, suggests a list of pesticides and insecticides whose level has to be confirmed before using the materials in food (i.e) the level of pesticides and insectisides in the raw materials has to be checked by every food industry before using them in their production.

The list encloses a list of 100 pesticides and insecticides that has to be checked for each category of products such as

  1. Fruits and Vegetables
  2. Meat products
  3. Fish products
  4. Milk and Milk products
  5. Dry nuts
  6. Species
  7. Food grains
